Giving our dogs small choices can make a big difference to their wellbeing.
Just like us, dogs feel happier and more confident when they have some control over what happens to them. While we can’t give them total freedom, like eating whatever they find or walking into unsafe areas, we can offer safe opportunities for choice on walks.
Try slowing down and letting your dog pick the direction or decide where to stop and sniff. Sniffing isn’t “wasting time”, it’s how dogs explore, de-stress, and process the world. Sometimes these walks are much shorter than we planned… and sometimes they’re hilariously random. You may find yourself walking in a loop around the same tree several times, inspecting a patch of grass for 10 minutes, or wandering down a street you’d never normally choose. It encourages us to see the world through our dog’s eyes, and that’s pretty magical.
Dogs who are offered choice often show more confidence, calmer behaviour, improved focus on their humans, and better relaxation afterwards. A “let them lead” walk can mentally tire a dog more than a long, fast-paced route where we decide everything. Offering choice builds trust and says, “I’m listening to you.” That alone strengthens your bond.
Try it this week:
Choose one walk where your dog leads the way. Let them sniff, explore, and set the pace. Notice how they respond—and notice how you feel slowing down and just being with them. I’d love to know how you get on.
This was Rocket’s walk today 🙂
