Helping a fearful rescue dog feel safe around men ![]()
If you’ve welcomed a rescue dog into your home—especially one from overseas—they will likely be fearful of men. Sadly, it’s something I see often in my work with dog rescue charities – many dogs will have experienced cruelty and abuse from men.
It’s our job to help them feel safe again – but how?
The key? Take it slow. Always go at your dog’s pace.
There’s no quick fix, and trying to rush trust can make things worse.
Avoid putting pressure on your dog by asking male family members or visitors to offer treats or approach them—this can actually cause them more stress.
Right now, it’s not about “fixing” the fear. It’s about showing your dog they have a choice, and they are safe.
Be their safe space. Let your dog lead the way.
With time, consistency, and compassion, trust can grow—on their terms, not ours. #NationalRescueDogDay
